Laboriously built during two hundred years from 1163 until 1345, it has majestically sat  for seven centuries on the « Ile de la Cité ». Under the reign of Louis XIV, the cathedral was considered no longer attractive and the french population wanted to destroy it. During the French Revolution, Notre-Dame was ransacked and relegated as a warehouse. In the 19 century, the French hestitated to finance its restoration. In the end Notre-Dame has to thank Victor Hugo, the romantic and anticlerical poet and for his engagement and clear-sightedness which led to renewals and consequently, Notre-Dame’s salvation.
