Stay at the Hotel Britannique and the dine at the romantic restaurant, Mystery Cuisine, and learn how the French combine love of food and love.

Honestly, we can think of no better way to spend time in Paris than to have a culinary journey after a day of sleeping late, then slowly sauntering around the Louvre. Enter Mystery Cuisine and romance—the Parisian Way.
First impressions upon hearing about this restaurant is that it might be gimmicky. But the second impression – the one you get when you enter this warm restaurant with its many private, cozy alcoves – leads to the third, fourth and fifth impression which is: a life lasting memory of time and money well spent on exquisite food, sweet surprises and the perfect place to pop the question… or to prep you for sleeping in late again. Smile. Yes, Mystery Cuisine is expensive, but less so than dining at the Jules Verne on the Eiffel Tower… and way more romantic and, well, Parisian.

Edouard Desrousseaux De Vandière is a true creative – and one almost doesn’t want to explain how, because the surprises should be kept for the diner. But do expect that he might arrive to fire up a torch to heat your slate table (directly on the table!), where he literally paints oil directly on the heated table, then proceeds to put down banana leaves and build the most squealingly lovely to-see-and-eat appetizers. Right. Before. Your. Eyes. There’s molecular magic going on in the kitchen with Vietnamese chef Thu-La, who does Asian-French fusion to haute gastronomic perfection.

There’s a reason why we call this a romantic restaurant.

There’s a reason why the French call this a smart address.

And speaking of addresses, this is in the 1st arrondissement—same as the Hotel Britannique:

Mystery Cuisines
37 bis rue de Montpensier
Paris, 75001
Hours: Tuesday-Saturday for dinner.

At the heart of the Quartier Latin is the area of Saint-Severin, one of the best preserved parishes of the Old Paris. It has kept its plan of the 13th century and many houses of 16th and 18th centuries. After 1944, Saint-Severin was one of the main places of rejoicing of the liberated Paris that the Americans especially appreciated. The Parisians discovered then a music coming from overseas… At the Caveau de la Huchette and the cabaret-restaurant Aux Trois Mailletz, you will relive the musical atmosphere of that time.

**********************************************************************************************************************

CAVEAU DE LA HUCHETTE

At the No. 5 of the Rue de la Huchette is situated the Caveau de la Huchette, famous jazz club, probably the first in the capital. It is directed and hosted since 1970 by Dany Doriz, jazzman with an international career.

Live jazz music at the Caveau de la Huchette

Live jazz concerts are given almost every evening starting from 22:15. You can listen or dance on a swing music played by the best jazz musicians.

The detailed program can be found online at : Caveau de la Huchette – Program

After this concert, and until late evening or night, swing, rock, soul music, rhythm’ n’ blues and disco take you on a musical journey from the 50s to early 80s.

Le Caveau de la Huchette has a long history…

The Rue de La Huchette was known from the late Middle Age for its inns, and later in the 18th century for its Rôtisseurs and cabarets. The Caveau de La Huchette is steeped in the history of Paris, which has kept the marks of the past.

First place of secret meetings of the Templars and the Rosicrucians, and then transformed into a secret Masonic lodge in 1772, it consisted of two lower rooms superimposed. Each room had its own secret underground passage, one leading to the Chatelet, the other under the Cloister of St. Severin.

Then in 1789 and during the Revolution, under the banner of the Caveau of Terror, it has housed the club of the Cordeliers and the Montagnards.

The upper room was converted into a tavern; they drank, sang and talked of freedom. Danton, Marat, Robespierre met themselves there. Many judgments followed by executions were made directly on site. In the lower room, where certain crimes have been committed, a very deep well permitted to eliminate the victims.

The rooms have been kept in their original condition, with old arms on the walls.

After the 2nd World War, while Paris celebrates its newfound freedom, a music coming from overseas invaded St-Germain des Prés…

After having been a while the Théâtre de la Chanson at the time he greeted Les Frères Jacques, Ferré or Brassens, and the first sketches of Roger Pierre and Jean Marc Thibault, the Caveau de la Huchette began, from 1948, to receive the greatest jazz names.

The best jazz, swing or bebop bands were produced under its vaults. The exceptional ambience of the Caveau de Huchette is reminiscent of the great epoch of the Cotton Club and the Savoy! The greatest Jazzmen were welcomed: Lionel Hampton, Maxim Saury, Memphis Slim, Sidney Bechet, Art Blakey And His Jazz Messengers, Marc Laferriere, Panama Francis and His Savoy Sultans, and more…

Very quickly the Caveau de la Huchette became the capital’s busiest jazz club. A few filmmakers have also chosen it to turn their film: Marcel Carné « Les Tricheurs », in 1958 ; Claude Berri « la Première fois » in 1976 ; Véra Belmont « Rouge baiser » in 1985.

The Caveau de la Huchette, managed and hosted since 1970 by Dany Doriz

Dany Doriz is managing the Caveau de la Huchette since 1970. Pianist and saxophonist, Dany Doriz was fascinated at the age of 16 years for the vibraphone and jazz. In 1958-1959, he experiences the scene and played in Paris Aux Trois Mailletz, of which we speak below.

He met greatest jazzmen and has participated in many tours in France and Europe. In 1975, he met with Lionel Hampton in New York. The two men became friends, and in 1976 they played together during a major tour which ended by a concert at the Caveau de la Huchette. In a crazy atmosphere, the club celebrated its 30 years of jazz.

Jazzman for ever … in parallel, Dany Doriz is continuing his career, playing around the world with the Dany Doriz Big Band and the Caveau de la Huchette Swing Show.

You will find the brand Aux Trois Mailletz, which counts among the oldest of Paris at the No. 56 of the Rue Galande, just a few minutes walk from the Rue de la Huchette.

Piano bar, restaurant on ground floor and cabaret in the basement, the Three Mailletz is also an address well known for its jazz concerts in the post-war period.
« We absolutely loved it! The hotel was in such a great location and was excellent value for money! The staff were so helpful and really helped me out when I was planning to propose to my then girlfriend, now fiance! When we got home from the Eiffel tower after getting engaged the staff had left chocolates, rose petals and champagne glasses on our bed which topped off a fantastic night. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone! » Justin M. USA, 11 February 2011.

« The hotel was very warm, welcoming, and relaxing. Staff did everything possible to help us enjoy all that Paris has to offer. We hope to visit again and if we do we will stay with the Hotel Britannique ». Alyssa H, 04 February 2011

« An excellent and well run hotel with welcoming service and lovely rooms. Free upgrade and gifts when we mentioned it was a wedding anniversary were very much appreciated. We would happily recommend this hotel to anyone. » Gareth B, 22 January 2011

« The rooms were charming. The location was terrific. The staff was so nice and all the recommendations they made (places to see, places to eat, directions) were perfect. We will recommend it completely! A wonderful time at a great hotel. Highly recommended! » Peggy M, 11 January 2011

« From the first time we stayed here, in 1992, our visits have always been enjoyable and the experiences pleasurable. From the comfortable rooms to the friendly staff to the satisfying breakfast, staying at the Britanniqe makes being in Paris that much greater. Staying here is always a great experience, but it would be even better if there was just a little bar for an evening drink in that wonderful sitting room downstairs.
« This was our 5th stay at the Britannique. We love the location, the room decor, and most importantly the friendly efficient helpful staff. I enjoyed the flowers and candy that arrived in my room for my birthday celebration. Your front desk staff made many restaurant, taxi and other reservations for my husband and myself and our 2 traveling companions. we have recommended the Britannique to several friends who have also enjoyed their stays there. We will be back soon. » Lynda S, 04 January 2011

« Hotel Britannique was a wonderful experience and I would definitely go back for another visit. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom was clean. I also appreciated having a mini bar. The bed linens were clean. Something that I really liked was the lovely long window that we could open. The view was really nice, too. The location was superior, being within walking distance of the Louvre and Notre Dame cathedral. Finally, I have been teaching myself French for a couple of years now and the staff at the hotel were really helpful to me in practicing my French. Overall, the Britannique was an excellent value for the money. » Shelly W, 31 December 2010

« Hotel Britannique was extremely comfortable, the room was spotless. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly with very good English. We were very happy with our stay ». Paul B 29 December 2010

« The staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful. The room was spotless and the little honeymoon extras were a delight after a tiring and snow-interrupted journey. This hotel is well-situated and has a really lovely ambience. Highly recommend this charming hotel. » Jacqueline C, 22 December 2010

« Great Hotel with a great location. Rooms were small, quaint, very clean and nicely decorated. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Would definitely stay there again. » Paul H, 25 November 2010

« We had an amazing stay with you. It was for our honeymoon, and could not have been better! Thank you for your hospitality!! We found the hotel to be in the perfect location and easy to access from anywhere! We will definitely recommend this hotel to anyone and will stay again on our next visit to Paris. » Nicola G, 14 October 2010
