Paris Plages (Paris Beaches) turn the banks of the Seine into a summer resort. Sandy beaches are created on which to relax, free concerts are staged in the evenings and a wide selection of activities are made available. You don’t have to go to the seaside if the seaside comes to you! This has been an eagerly anticipated event every year since 2002, but its roots go even deeper into time, as a fascinating exhibition at the Maison de Balzac shows…
Beaches in Paris by Daumier : a retrospective of Seine-side fun
The banks of the Seine have long been popular for leisure, especially in the summer. The French artist and satirist Honoré Daumier made a speciality of commenting upon the political and social life of 19th century France in his brilliant caricatures. He once had a spell in jail for caricaturing the king, but he was indeed a genius at capturing the unrehearsed moments of daily life. He turned his attention to the fashion for leisure on the Seine, and this is the theme of a delightful retrospective at the Maison de Balzac from June 20th to September 28th, timed to coincide with Paris Plages. Forty engravings and several paintings bear witness to the artist’s consummate skill.
The appeal of the Seine is still strong in the hearts of Parisians, as demonstrated by the immense popularity of Paris Plages. Mayor Bertrand Delanoe’s brainchild comes to life from July 20th to August 20th. Three locations; the Louvre/ Pont de Sully, the Pont de la Gare and the Bassin de la Villette become places of summer joy with sandy beaches, deckchairs, parasols, ice-cream vendors, fountains, swimming pools, games and water sports provided by the city, and everyone is welcome to join in. So if you need a change from enjoying the many attractions that Paris offers, why not simply unwind with a day at the beach?
