Paris Plages (Paris beaches) is a wonderfully crazy and inspired idea that has proven immensely popular amongst Parisians and visitors alike. For a month during the summer three locations in the heart of the city are transformed into seaside resorts, complete with beaches, entertainment, recreation and all the atmosphere of a seaside holiday. The Hotel Britannique is just a few minutes walk from the banks of the Seine and all the fun of this free event, which runs from July 20th to August 18th.
Paris Plages provide seaside fun for everyone
Paris Plages , annual event at the height of summer, was dreamed up by the Paris Mayor, Bertrand Delanoe, and first took place in 2002. Since then it has proved so popular that just one location could not contain it all, and the fun has spread to three locations. The original area chosen was an almost two mile stretch from the Louvre to the Pont de Sully. The Georges Pompidou Expressway is closed to traffic and some 3000 tons of sand is shipped in and formed into a golden beach. Boardwalk style snack bars are set up, ice cream vendors ply their trade, parasols are raised and deckchairs are firmly planted beneath the sun’s soothing rays.
There’s free concerts, sports events, live music and even a floating swimming pool on the river. Should you get too hot in the Parisian sunshine, mist spray points are provided where you can cool down. Another Paris beach is situated near the Port de la Gare railway station, and a third at the Bassin de la Villette, where a lake and water sports complex is provided where you can take a kayak, canoe, sailboat or pedalo on the water, or attend an aquagym class. It’s no wonder that Paris Plages are a permanent highlight of the Parisian summer calendar.
