Romantic Paris walk ; the phrase conjures up visions of strolling hand in hand by the Seine as lovers have done since time immemorial, along streets steeped in history, amidst the enchanting views of eternal Parisian landmarks, enraptured in the city whose name has become a byword for romance. A mere ten minute walk from the Hotel Britannique lies possibly the most charmingly romantic location in Paris, a place still relatively undiscovered by tourists, the Ile Saint Louis.
Romantic Paris walk on an island in the Seine
The Ile Saint Louis was where the Celts first settled in this area and founded Parisii, so this unassuming isle is the true original heart of Paris. Originally used for grazing cattle and storing wood, the island was built up in the 17th century, and it has changed very little since that time, and is today like a small town in the midst of the city; a part of Paris and yet somehow separate.
Here you can wander the narrow streets and admire the small shops, art galleries and wonderful old houses, listen to the buskers on the Pont Saint Louis, and savour a homemade Berthillon ice cream.
At the tip of the island is a teardrop shaped park, the Square du Vert Galant (the Gay Blade), a verdant oasis where Hemingway often paused to gaze out at the river. Here at the very edge of the water you can stand beneath a weeping willow that is said to be the first in Paris to burst into leaf each Spring. Just across the water from this timeless place can be seen the majestic bulk of Notre Dame Cathedral on the adjacent Ile de la Cite; its dramatic flying buttresses and magical gargoyles standing out in sharp relief against a blue Parisian sky.
