The Palace of Versailles, one of the most beautiful achievements of 17th-century French art.
Symbol of the heyday of French royalty, the Palace of Versailles is one of the most remarkable monuments of France and the world.
The former hunting lodge of Louis XIII was transformed and extended by his son, Louis XIV. The court and government of France were moving to Versailles in 1682. Beautiful place of parade and reception, the palace was embellished by the construction of the Chapel and the Opera under Louis XV.
The Palace of Versailles is one of the finest achievements of French art in the 17th century. It counts 2300 rooms, the King’s Grand Apartments and the magnificent Hall of Mirrors imagined by Mansart.
In the 19th century, the palace became the Museum of the History of France. The many rooms house the new collections, which were added to until the early 20th century, tracing milestones in French history. The palace of Versailles has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage List for 30 years.
