Until May 15th, 2011 at the Quai Branly Museum, Paris
The Quai Branly Museum presents a fine collection of 150 traditional costumes and finery of the Middle East, which takes the visitor for a walk from the north of Syria to the Sinai Peninsula.
Christian Lacroix was involved in the research and has realized the scenography of this fascinating exhibition, organized by Hana Chidiac, Manager of the collections of North Africa and Middle East, at the Quai Branly Museum.
This exhibition pays beautiful homage to all women, humble and anonymous, who have crafted their own clothes and finery in the eastern countries.
Beyond the social and political disruption, the garment asserts itself as a dazzling composition of colors, patterns and identities. Sometimes we discover the magnificence, sometimes the simplicity of these garments.
Party dresses, coats, veils and headdresses reveal a cultural wealth which arouses wonderment. Dating from the thirteenth century, the oldest piece is a little girl dress, found during archaeological excavations conducted in Lebanon.
But most of the presented pieces are from the late nineteenth century to the present, and demonstrate the continuity of traditions and knowledge transmitted from mother to daughter.
The exhibition ends with 5 white dresses embroidered with colors, remembering the tradition of the fashion show that ends with a wedding dress.
This exhibition celebrates feminity in all its aspects. Poetic and flamboyant, it also wants to be fun. To better understand the remarkable variety of the tissue and the thickness, the firmness of embroidered shirts areas, and the weight of some others…you will touch three dresses at the end of the exhibition.
You will be able to enjoy a relaxing area with seats designed by Christian Lacroix, and discover painting miniatures, dolls clothed in traditional dresses and other embroidered little dresses created especially for the exhibition.
